It has come to our attention that over the past three years according to new data the police have failed to solve a single burglary in nearly half of all 30,100 neighbourhoods across England and Wales.

This statistic follows a pledge in October 2022 that all police forces across England and Wales would attend every home burglary. The police are attending these burglaries but unfortunately, their attendance is not resulting in any increase in criminal charges.

Hertfordshire Constabulary appears to be the worst-performing police force with only 2.2% of burglaries across its area resulting in a charge in the past year. This equates to just one burglary in 50 reported.

South Wales police force sits at the top of the league with a charge rate of 9.6%, which although far better than other areas is not a great conversion rate.

These figures are a huge concern for every householder knowing that in many areas, burglars are aware that if they break into someone’s home, they are likely to get away with it. The lack of investigations and subsequent charges mean that serial burglars are still on the street, which will no doubt lead to a rise in burglary numbers.

Burglary is an extremely traumatic experience. Many victims feel anxious, angry and violated, which can lead to paranoia, depression and insomnia. When a burglary crime is not resolved, a victim can be concerned that it may occur again, worrying excessively when away from the home or even when present.

The low clear-up rate for all crime is due to overstretched police forces who after government cuts to police funding in 2010, lost over 20,000 police officers. These officers have now been replaced with younger, less experienced individuals, who are having to investigate much more complex crimes compared to a decade ago.

Cyber, global and sex crimes are taking much more time to investigate and therefore burglaries are being pushed to the bottom of the pile. Public trust in the police remains at an all-time low, with some members of the public wondering why they bother reporting certain crimes other than for insurance.

In the event of a burglary many homes and businesses have CCTV which is a valuable tool for identifying criminals and solving crimes, but it also takes a lot of time to examine and evaluate.

As a home or business owner, it is essential that you do everything possible to protect yourself and your property from harm. It is possible to improve your security from simple alarms and CCTV to security guards, getting in contact with a professional security company before a break-in occurs can give you great peace of mind and prevent loss or heartbreak.
